California Counties Using Desalination As Primary Water Source
Due to a water shortage in 2009, Monterey County had to lower their intake of water from the Carmel River, by seventy percent in 7 years. Lucky for the county they have one large resource that many others do not, the ocean. They have begun a desalination project to provide water to over 100,000 citizens. And they are not the only ones, Sand City, California has also begun a desalination program after building a low impact plant. This plant however, can not supply the number of people that Montery County holds but Montery officials projected that by 2014 almost all residents will drinking purified sea water.
Not only do the desalination programs help the Camel River from running dry but it also helps the trout population from having to leave the area. Desalination plants continue to grow to be a popular way of sourcing water. We can use the open source technology in the Global Innovation Commons to begin the research and development process at a lower cost. Check out the category on Desalination today!
