Many Reynosa residents lack clean water and safe, durable living conditions. In abundance, there is plastic and water filled with chemicals. Therefore, the challenge is to identify water purification technologies, and plastic recycling technologies which can turn the plastic into building materials. Some technologies may be compatible and accomplish both at the same time.
Reynosa, Mexico is located just south of the United States border, near Texas. Reynosa is a central hub of commerce as many American companies located nearby after the NAFTA agreeement was signed. The companies produce mostly large consumer durable goods and send them up the main highway to the United States. While the companies employ some Reynosa residents, their presence has actually worsened the local environment. Lack of environmental protection laws or awareness has allowed these companies to scatter any waste or chemical wherever they so choose. This pollution has poisoned water supplies and piled large plastic mounds around the area. So, from a Global Innovation Commons perspective, there is much to do.
