Chagas disease is an illness caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi.  The disease is spread through reduvid bugs and is one of the largest health issues in South America.  Approximately 20 million people are infected in South America alone.  Due to immigration from countries like Mexico and Central and South America, about 500,000 people in the United States are believed to be infected with Chagas disease.  Chagas can result in acute inflammatory skin alterations known as “chagomas” and may lead to chronic infection and inflammation of other bodil
