EMAS: Mobile School for Water Sanitation

For over twenty years, EMAS, or Mobile School for Wter Sanitation, located in Bolivia, has had one goal, "to provide access to safe drinking water, to as many people worldwide."  Based on concepts and technologies that begun with founder Wolfgang Buchner, EMAS is based on the principle of "helping people help themselves."

Not only is the world’s water supply drying up, but much of the remaining water is contaminated.  The world bank estimates that as many as two billion people drink unsanitary water.  Eighty percent of health problems in developing countries can be attributed to unsafe water.

Reynosa Mexico - Plastic Recycling and Water Cleanup

Country or Countries Where Challenge Takes Place: 

 Many Reynosa residents lack clean water and safe, durable living conditions.  In abundance, there is plastic and water filled with chemicals.  Therefore, the challenge is to identify water purification technologies, and plastic recycling technologies which can turn the plastic into building materials.  Some technologies may be compatible and accomplish both at the same time.  

Commodity: 
Plastics, water filled with heavy metals and chemicals, sand, dirt, minimal scrub, large multinational corporations continuing to produce plastics (constant stream).
Custom & Culture: 
Reynosa is on the Mexico and United States border. Due to the location, it is one of the largest border crossing points on the entire US/Mexico border. This creates commerce, but also conflict. There has been a recent increase in drug cartel violence. Also, flooding has been problematic in many areas. Water must be imported because groundwater is poisoned, there is a need for adequate shelter.

Well-Being: 
Residents in Reynosa have strong community. Basic living standards need to be improved. Water is poisoned and needs to be imported. Food, clothing and shelter do not meet basic needs. Crime and violence are high. Good groups and individuals are working on these issues. The situation has improved - a few months ago, the situation was extremely dangerous.

Arkhangai Greenhouse

Use available glass resource and collaborate to find ways to improve an existing greenhouse and thus extend the growing period of the Hasu Shivert Resort in the Arkhangai province.

Custom & Culture: 
Resort has been traditionally Russian but has since been operated by Mongolians. Proprietor Munkhbat Hasu runs the facility and staff are trained in hospitality. Many agriculture workers work in the greenhouses, on grounds and near the property. Hasu is well known for his prized racing horses. Sporting facilities, swimming and hot tub facilities are all on grounds. Traditional Mongolian activities such as horse riding and archery are available.

Local knowledge about banking, business, short term debt cycles and credit matched with timeline. Farming, greenhouse, algae growing, resort operations, food and beverage, dining, health spa operation, massage, tourism, horse training

Excessive Flooding Means Health Risk For Children

Children in Pakistan, affected by the on going floods, are becoming at risk for water-borne diseases. The worst monsoon season in over 75 years is continuing to devastate Pakistan from the north-west to south and central Pakistan. In early August, authorities had evacuated over 500,000 people in 11 different districts. At that point, flooding at submerged entire villages killing more than 1,500 people and affected over 4 million. The people in these regions are with out electricity and being force to move out of their homes to the southern regions.
