LONDON, Dec. 20 (UPI) -- France's state-owned nuclear power giant is having new safety instrumentation, control, technologies and systems by Rolls-Royce installed on 20 reactors.

Areva said the instrumentation and systems to be provided by Britain's Rolls-Royce under a $325 million contract are part of a third round modernization program that involves 20 nuclear reactors managed by Electricite de France.

Each reaction is has a capacity of 1,300 megawatts.

Turkey on Wednesday agreed to let Russia build and own a $20 billion nuclear power plant in a deal that opens a new page in Russia’s global expansion in the industry.

Sergei Kiriyenko, head of Rosatom, the state nuclear corporation, signed the agreement to build four reactors on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast during a visit by President Dmitry Medvedev to the country.

China picked Toshiba Corp.'s Westinghouse Electric Co. for the biggest international nuclear reactor contract in history, trumping Areva SA for a project worth about $5.3 billion.

Westinghouse will build two reactors at Sanmen in Zhejiang province and two at Yangjiang in Guangdong, the U.S. Department of Energy said. U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman and Ma Kai, head of China's National Development and Reform Commission, signed the agreement in Beijing today.

(MHI) has reached an agreement with Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Pty) Ltd (PBMR Pty) of the Republic of South Africa to study the area of collaboration in the development of the "Pebble Bed Modular Reactor" (PBMR). A memorandum of agreement (MOU) was signed on February 3. Based on the MOU, MHI will initially study the area for possible collaboration in the design of 200 MWt (megawatts thermal) plant, which PBMR Pty is currently developing.
