TAQA Arabia, an Egyptian firm, has signed a $1b, deal with Chui, a local firm to develop hydropower projects in Uganda.

Taqa Power Africa, a partnership between Taqa Arabia, a subsidiary of Citadel Capital and Chui, owned by businessman Charles Mbire, will design, construct, operate and maintain small-and-medium size power plants that will add about 200MW to the power grid in the next five years.

However, Taqa Power has not yet identified the sites for the projects, nor received operating licences.

The world’s third-largest hydro power plant in Venezuela rejuvenated Alstom Hydro* has signed a 31 million euro contract with Venezuelan public utility EDELCA to rehabilitate five generators at the Simón Bolívar – Guri hydroelectric power plant, located on the Caroni river in the South-East of Venezuela. This is the fourth consecutive contract awarded by EDELCA to Alstom and is part of a complete modernization programme to extend the plant’s life by thirty years.

Alstom has been awarded a €125 million contract to equip the new Nant de Drance hydropower station, near Finhaut in the southwestern Canton Valais of Switzerland, with its first variable speed pump storage power plant*. This partner project, between Swiss energy provider Alpiq, Forces Motrices Valaisannes (FMV) and Swiss federal railways SBB, demonstrates the first ever use of this type of technology in Switzerland.

Alstom Hydro* has been awarded a €178 million contract to provide four 250 MW variable speed pump turbine and motor generator units for a new pumped storage installation in Switzerland.
