TAQA Arabia, an Egyptian firm, has signed a $1b, deal with Chui, a local firm to develop hydropower projects in Uganda.

Taqa Power Africa, a partnership between Taqa Arabia, a subsidiary of Citadel Capital and Chui, owned by businessman Charles Mbire, will design, construct, operate and maintain small-and-medium size power plants that will add about 200MW to the power grid in the next five years.

However, Taqa Power has not yet identified the sites for the projects, nor received operating licences.

Alstom, in consortium with ANDRITZ HYDRO GmbH, has been awarded a contract by Dagachhu Hydro Power Corporation Limited (DHPC)* to supply key electromechanical equipment to a new hydropower station in Bhutan.

Alstom has been awarded a €125 million contract to equip the new Nant de Drance hydropower station, near Finhaut in the southwestern Canton Valais of Switzerland, with its first variable speed pump storage power plant*. This partner project, between Swiss energy provider Alpiq, Forces Motrices Valaisannes (FMV) and Swiss federal railways SBB, demonstrates the first ever use of this type of technology in Switzerland.

Alstom, a world leader in the supply of hydropower equipment and services, has signed a contract with Kiewit Alarie Partnership (KAP) to supply three turbine generator sets to Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Lower Mattagami Project in Northern Ontario.

Alstom Hydro will supply two 320 MW turbine/generator units to the new complex that will consist of four hydropower generating stations with an annual output of 8.0 TWh.
